Why 28mm and I are going through a trial seperation

Just finished painting up this figure from Hasslefree, I wanted a manga kind of look for his top and hair, and of course his golden gun. I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out although I think on reflection the purple is a bit flat and needed more highlights/shading.

As the name of the post suggests I'm having a trial separation from painting 28mm (mostly). Over the last 3 years or so I have painted a lot of WW1/WW2 type stuff in 28mm which required me to finish squads and platoons etc. As a result I'm actually quite tired/bored with painting units of beige/khaki 28mm figures, equally I just don't seem to have the stamina to paint the same colour scheme over any groups of 28mm figures at the moment.

So I'm going to have a break. Instead I will be working on my 6mm projects, and "single" 28mm figures so Zombies, post apoc or fantasy figures that are not part of units but would be on their own so I can just work on that one figure without feeling I have another 9 to do before its finished.

I'm sure I'll end up going back to collecting 28mm army's but at the moment I'm a bit fed up painting tons of 28mm and I have enough troops for the games I actually game (VBCW) to not need more troops.

  1. I tried that and it happened in 15mm but I know what you mean!

  2. I know how you feel. I still won't give up on 28mm, but I rotate projects fairly often to deal with the boredom of painting the same thing over and over.

  3. Firstly what a great looking miniature! Secondly, I can see exactly what you mean about painting the same thing over and over again - fortunately for me I can't seem to focus on one topic long enough to get bored!

  4. I got similarly burned out after painting imperial guard for 40K. I quit 40K and got into superheroes, because each one is unique. I still have little stomach for painting large blocks of infantry, and find that five or six is the most I can do in one go before I have to start something else. That said, there are loads of games out there now which only need 5-10 figures aside: Pulp city; Anima Tactics; legends of the old west; Mordihiem; AE Bounty. What ever floats your boat really. I think you will enjoy new pastures, and find they can be just as rewarding.

  5. Thanks guys its heartening to hear I'm not alone in my tiredness of a particular scale. I'm actually quite excited to have made the break as it were and be working on my 6mm projects and better painted single figures.

  7. Mr Smillie that is a great figure that you have painted and I think it has got that Anime look down to a tee. However I do what you mean as I am suffering the same, I think it is mainly because we organised such a great game, it look so good and we got lots of great comments it is had to go next. It is a worry that its only those big projects that get me, at least motivated into painting. For me thats was I have gone down the Dark Age and painting them as no too are the same. I am sure you will get your mojo back and I look forward to seeing more of the 6mm stuff
